German-Zambian Agricultural Knowledge and Training Centre

Climate-resilient and agroecological cultivation for the further development of modern agriculture in Zambia and the region - development, testing, dissemination, training

Group at a training course in Zambia
Training operations in Zambia

The Project

Since August 2014, the Zambian-German Agricultural Knowledge and Training Centre (AKTC) has been operating a training centre where market-oriented Zambian farmers, experts and managers of agricultural businesses as well as multipliers (universities, advisory services) are trained in modern sustainable plant production and agricultural technology. Climate-resilient and agroecological production methods have been added as new focus areas. Since 2024, agroecological cultivation trials have been scientifically monitored by the Julius Kühn Institute. In order to disseminate knowledge beyond Zambia, the project is working with the farmers' association SACAU, which represents the interests of farmers in southern Africa.

Project duration | August 2021 to December 2025 |

Project goals

  • Qualification of target groups in the practical application of modern technologies and sustainable cultivation methods
  • Further development into a competence centre for climate-resistant plant production
  • Development of new trial and demonstration areas for sustainable, conservation farming methods, regenerative agriculture and agroecology
  • Expansion of local, regional and international cooperation

Results and successes

Since 2014, the AKTC has trained more than 18,000 participants from Zambian agriculture and the agricultural education sector through training courses and demonstrations. Since 2023, the Zambian tractor driving licence can be obtained at the AKTC. In addition to collaborations, including with the University of Zambia and the Natural Resource College, the AKTC acts as a consultant for the development of training content for the Technical Education, Vocational Training and Entrepreneurship Authority (TEVETA).

Together with the University of Hohenheim and the Julius Kühn Institute, the AKTC conducts research into mechanised conservation tillage and agroecological approaches. Proven economic benefits also help to convince farmers.

Agriculture in Zambia

58 % of the 75 million hectares of land in Zambia can be used for agriculture, but only 15 % is currently being farmed. The agricultural policy focuses, among other things, on the expansion of agricultural research and advice as well as on the mechanisation and diversification of agriculture. In order to reduce the effects of climate change, the Zambian government is promoting measures for climate-resistant cultivation methods and investments in climate- and resource-friendly technologies.
